This role is part of the Implementations team and works closely with clients, internal stakeholders, and EMR vendors to ensure accurate and secure data exchange. The engineer will leverage HL7 standards, interface engine expertise (e.g., Mirth Connect), and RCM domain knowledge to develop integrations that align with business and billing workflow requirements.

Essential Functions and Tasks

Interface Development & Implementation

  • Lead end-to-end development of client interfaces, including requirements gathering, mapping, configuration, testing, and deployment.
  • Build and maintain HL7, XML, JSON, CSV, and API-based interfaces using Mirth Connect or similar tools.
  • Develop transformation logic (JavaScript, filters, mappings) to support ADT, ORU, SIU, DFT, MDM, and other RCM-related data feeds.
  • Ensure integrations meet data quality standards and align with downstream billing system requirements.

Client & Stakeholder Collaboration

  • Serve as the technical point of contact during client onboarding for all integration-related activities.
  • Collaborate with client IT teams and EMR vendors to define connectivity, transport methods (SFTP, VPN, APIs), and HL7 segment requirements.
  • Translate functional workflow into technical specifications and interface design documentation.

Testing & Validation

  • Develop and execute test plans, including unit, integration, and end-to-end validation of interfaces.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve data discrepancies, message errors, and workflow gaps using interface logs and HL7 analysis tools.
  • Validate receipt, formatting, and completeness of clinical, demographic, and billing data required for accurate revenue cycle processing.

Production Support for Implementations

  • Provide post-go-live support to ensure interface stability and smooth transition to support teams.
  • Document interface configuration, mapping logic, and workflow dependencies for long-term maintenance.
  • Contribute to standardizing templates and improving processes that streamline interface onboarding.

Education and Experience Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Health Informatics, or related field, or equivalent work experience.
  • 3–5+ years of experience building HL7 interfaces in healthcare or RCM settings.

  • Experience with interface engines such as Mirth Connect.
  • Working knowledge of SFTP, VPN, networking basics, and API integrations.

Preferred:

  • Experience within a Revenue Cycle Management organization.
  • Knowledge of medical coding workflows, documentation feeds, and charge capture processes.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Deep understanding of HL7 v2.x messaging standards (ADT, ORU, SIU, DFT, MDM, ORM).
  • Knowledge of interoperability workflows common in revenue cycle management environments.
  • Familiarity with EMR/EHR systems (Epic, Cerner, Athena, NextGen, eClinicalWorks, etc.).
  • Understanding of HIPAA and data security requirements related to PHI.
  • Hands-on proficiency with Mirth Connect (channels, transformers, filters, scripting).
  • Strong troubleshooting and analytical skills using logs, message tracing, and debugging tools.
  • Proficiency in JavaScript, SQL, or related scripting languages.
  • Strong documentation and technical writing skills.
  • Effective communication and client-facing professionalism.
  • Ability to manage multiple interface projects in a fast-paced implementation environment.
  • Ability to translate technical requirements into clear, actionable tasks.
  • Ability to work collaboratively across cross-functional teams.
  • Strong attention to detail and a commitment to data accuracy.
  • Ability to understand business needs and align technical solutions to workflow requirements.

Compensation

  • Base Compensation will be based on various factors unique to each candidate including geographic location, skill set, experience, qualifications, and other job-related reasons.
  • This position is also eligible for a discretionary incentive bonus in accordance with company policies.
