Job Summary

  • The Assistant Manager, Medical Coding is responsible for overseeing and managing a team of medical coders, ensuring accurate and timely coding of medical services. This role is critical in ensuring accurate reimbursement and compliance with coding regulations.

Essential Functions and Tasks

Team Management:

  • Lead and mentor a team of medical coders, providing training, guidance, and support.

Coding Accuracy:

  • Ensure the accuracy of medical coding, using the latest coding guidelines and rules (e.g., ICD-10-CM, CPT).

Coding Compliance:

  • Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations related to medical coding including current updates.

Training and Development:

  • Collaborate with Training and QA teams to develop and conduct training programs to enhance the coding skills of team members.

Documentation Review:

  • Review medical records to ensure that documentation supports coding decisions.

Coding Software:

  • Utilize coding software and tools to improve efficiency and accuracy.

Reporting:

  • Prepare and analyze reports on key performance indicators (KPIs) related to coding performance, such as coding accuracy rates and denials.

Performance Tracking: 

  • Track daily performance of the team members for production and quality and take corrective actions in a timely manner.

Production Volumes:

  • Track daily inflow of inventory and escalate in a timely manner for corrective actions.

Education and Experience Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in nursing, or any life science related areas.
  • Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) or Certified Professional Coder (CPC) certification is preferred.
  • 5+ years core experience in medical coding in relevant specialty.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • In-depth knowledge of medical coding guidelines (ICD-10-CM, CPT), medical terminology, and anatomy and physiology.
  • Strong leadership skills, including the ability to motivate and manage teams.
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Proficiency in medical coding software and other relevant technology tools.
  • Understanding of federal, state, and local regulations related to medical coding.
